Extra seminars - highly recommended

In addition to the lectures, we are also very happy that we can offer you seminars in this course. These seminars are NOT mandatory (“obligatoriske”), but you have the option of participating.

However, we would very strongly recommend that you take this opportunity and participate in the seminars. They will be of great help for you, both in terms of learning statistics (theory and practice go hand in hand when it comes to learning statistics!) and when it comes to conducting analysis required for writing your assignments. In the seminars, you will use the software package R, and you will learn how to use R effectively for conducting the types of analysis covered by the course.

We offer two parallel seminar series, over 5*2 hours; these series are identical except the dates seminars are held.

We are also very fortunate to have an excellent seminar leader, ?yvind Stiansen, who is a PhD Fellow here at the department, and has also functioned as seminar leader for R in STV4020A. ?yvind will hold both of the seminar series.

Some practical information: You should bring your personal laptops to the seminars, as they will not be held in computer labs, but rather in ordinary seminar rooms. This means that you should either install R on your laptop, or you can run R through UiO’s “Kiosk” option. Previous experience has suggested that this makes for fewer technical problems than running R on the computers in the university’s computer lab. If someone forgets or doesn’t have a laptop available, you could sit together with a co-student and work in pairs. But, we hope that as many as possible bring laptops to the seminars.
