ANTH4710 – Internship
Course content
The master`s programme in Social Anthropology offers an opportunity for students who want to broaden their portfolio to acquire practical work experience in relevant institutions. We encourage you to look for work at an institution that will also be relevant for your work on the master`s thesis.
The work may involve, for example:

Being involved in day-to-day activities of the chosen institution

Undertaking organizational tasks (e.g. preaparing a meeting or planning an event)

Preparing data (e.g. through smaller research activities, by assisting with website maintenance)
The scope of the work must be equivalent to six weeks` full-time study. The students shall not receive remuneration for the work. Please note that each student is only granted one internship.
Learning outcome
An internship provides the student with the opportunity to apply anthropological skills in a real work environment. It provides the student with an enhanced understanding of how his/her largely theoretical competence acquired through academic study can be applied.

Admission to the course
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

This course is not available for single course students.
SAI has limited administrative capacity to initiate contact between students and relevant institutions. Students must therefore explore and find internship options themselves. A contract between SAI, the relevant institution and the individual student specify each party`s rights and obligations during the internship is required. The student is responsible for ensuring that the contact be signed by all parts before starting the internship.
The following administrative procedures apply to internships:
1. The contact person at the relevant institution contacts the SAI coordinator to express interest in drawing up an internship contract with SAI and named student, specifying the tasks for which the intern would be employed.
2. Two contracts are developed: One framework agreement between internship institution and SAI and one agreement between internship institution and student. In the latter agreement, details about the nature of the work, the time period and other relevant matters are specified. While SAI is not a direct party to the latter contract, we need a copy even of this contract for our files.
3. To acquire student credits, the student must prepare a report, as detailed below under "Exam information". The student must register for the course ANTH4710 in Studentweb.

Formal prerequisite knowledge
Students must be enrolled in the master`s programme for Social Anthropology, and must have successfully completed ANTH4010 – Advanced Anthropological Theory, ANTH4020 – Academic Writing and Project Development og ANTH4030 – Advanced Anthropological Methods.
Teaching
The internship takes place throughout the short spring semester (January to March) or the early phase of fieldwork. The internship may replace a 10-credit optional course in the study plan.
Examination
The internship work must be equivalent to six weeks` full-time study to be able to sit for the exam.
Exam:
You must submit a 6-8 page report, which should cover two aspects:

A detailed description of the tasks performed during the internship

A discussion on the practical use of the anthropological theories and perspectives studied during the master`s programme as well as the extent of their applicability during the internship.

You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
