PSY4110 – Applied Qualitative Methods

Course content

This course offers students a hands-on approach to qualitative research methods in psychology. The course will focus on generating and working with qualitative data. The course aims to inform students` thinking towards the thesis proposal.

Learning outcome

By the end of the course, the students will be able to:

  • Formulate research questions that may be addressed using qualitative methods
  • Choose and plan an approach to producing qualitative data
  • Execute qualitative interviews?
  • Analyse qualitative data
  • Weigh criteria for quality in qualitative research
  • Consider and understand ethical challenges in qualitative research

Overlapping courses

Teaching

The teaching will be given through seminars and lectures. There will be 10 hours of lectures, and 8 hours of seminars.

Instead of compulsory activities, we will work on a portfolio assessment?throughout the semester. The assignment is closely tied to the activity in the seminars, and supervision will be given in the seminars.

Examination

There will be an individual?portfolio assessment. Part submissions will be handed in in Canvas. The final submission will be handed in in Inspera.?

Examination support material

All exam support materials are allowed during this portfolio assessment. Generating all or part of the exam answer using AI tools such as Chat GPT or similar is not allowed.

Language of examination

You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.

If you are an exchange student, please note that you will receive a pass or fail for this course and this cannot be converted into an A-F grading scale.
