PSY2012 – Research methodology III: Statistical analysis, design and measurement
Course description
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
Course content
This course is a continuation of PSY1010 – Innf?ring i metode and PSY2011 – 澳门葡京手机版app下载smetode II: Eksperimentell design og statistisk analyse (discontinued) in the sense that research methodological concepts and principles are subjected to further elaboration. Research problem, design, measurement and analysis of empirical data will still be the foci of attention. It is assumed that you are familiar with basic statistical concepts, as well as simple regression analysis from PSY1010 – Innf?ring i metode or a similar course.
Learning outcome
Knowledge:
- Account for the strengths and weaknesses of non-experimental studies, and discuss the role of ”statistical control” within these research designs.
- Be familiar with different scales of measurement, and know which measure of correlation is appropriate for variables measured at different scales.
- Describe the principles of multiple regression analysis, standardized and unstandardized regression coefficients, testing of significance, and the underlying statistical assumptions.
- Discuss causality in non-experimental research, and account for terms such as spurious effects, suppressors, mediation and interaction.
- Account for the principal ideas in classical test theory, and the various ways of estimating the reliability of psychological scales.
- Describe the validity of psychological measurements.
Skills:
- Choose the most appropriate measure to association between variables measured on different scales, and carry out the analysis.
- Conduct multiple regression analyses, interpret the results, and perform diagnostic checks on the model.
- Estimate the reliability of psychological scales.
- These skills will be attained through problem solving and practical SPSS exercises.
General competences:
- The course will give you the competence to construct and evaluate psychological instruments, as well as analyze and interpret the association between variables in non-experimental studies.
Admission
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.
If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures.
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
- PSY1010 – Innf?ring i metode or a course equivalent to PSY1010.
Recommended previous knowledge
- PSY2011 – 澳门葡京手机版app下载smetode II: Eksperimentell design og statistisk analyse (discontinued) or a course equivalent to PSY2011.
Overlapping courses

Teaching
The teaching schedule of PSY2012 includes lectures and working with assignments in seminar groups. The lecture spans 18 hrs, and the seminar series 16 hrs. Participation in the seminars is optional, but students are encouraged to follow a seminar group.
Podcasts of the lectures, that you can listen to or download, will be published in Fronter.
In the seminar the students will work with a set of “consolidating tasks” and additional methodological issues including exercises in applying the SPSS software.
Information regarding change of seminar group.
Examination
4 hours written examination.
Digital examination
The written examination is conducted in the digital examination system Inspera. You will need to familiarize yourself with the digital examination arrangements in Inspera.
Read more about written examinations using Inspera.
Examination support material
Students may use dictionaries at this exam. Dictionaries must be handed in before the examination. Please read regulations for dictionaries permitted at the examination.
Calculator without graphic or word display capabilities is allowed at the exam.
Language of examination
You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Explanations and appeals
Ask for explanation of your grade in this course
Resit an examination
If you are sick or have another valid reason for not attending the regular exam, we offer a postponed exam later in the same semester.
See also our information about resitting an exam.
Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
Special examination arrangements
Application form, deadline and requirements for special examination arrangements.
Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
