PSY2012 – Research methodology III: Statistical analysis, design and measurement

Course content

This course is a continuation of PSY1010 – Innf?ring i metode and PSY2011 – 澳门葡京手机版app下载smetode II: Eksperimentell design og statistisk analyse (discontinued) in the sense that research methodological concepts and principles are subjected to further elaboration. Research problem, design, measurement and analysis of empirical data will still be the foci of attention. It is assumed that you are familiar with basic statistical concepts, as well as simple regression analysis from PSY1010 – Innf?ring i metode or a similar course.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

  • Account for the strengths and weaknesses of non-experimental studies, and discuss the role of ”statistical control” within these research designs.
  • Be familiar with different scales of measurement, and know which measure of correlation is appropriate for variables measured at different scales.
  • Describe the principles of multiple regression analysis, standardized and unstandardized regression coefficients, testing of significance, and the underlying statistical assumptions.
  • Discuss causality in non-experimental research, and account for terms such as spurious effects, suppressors, mediation and interaction.
  • Account for the principal ideas in classical test theory, and the various ways of estimating the reliability of psychological scales.
  • Describe the validity of psychological measurements.

Skills:

  • Choose the most appropriate measure to association between variables measured on different scales, and carry out the analysis.
  • Conduct multiple regression analyses, interpret the results, and perform diagnostic checks on the model.
  • Estimate the reliability of psychological scales.
  • These skills will be attained through problem solving and practical SPSS exercises.

General competences:

  • The course will give you the competence to construct and evaluate psychological instruments, as well as analyze and interpret the association between variables in non-experimental studies.

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.
