LSI4010 – Business tools

Course content
This course aims to provide systematic tools for developing an idea into a business, such as new treatments or biomarkers, by utilizing a variety of business tools. The candidate will acquire essential knowledge to transform an attractive innovation idea into a startup company within a cross-disciplinary team. Additionally, the candidate will develop skills in leadership and interdisciplinary collaboration, using prepared innovation ideas from the UiO environment to cultivate the abilities needed to create realistic business models and pitch business proposals to various stakeholders and customers.
Learning outcome
After completing the course, you will have the following competencies:
- A broad understanding of the concept of business tools and use this to analyze business ideas presented
- To build business proposals through systematic use of tools such as Business Model Canvas, Lean canvas and Design thinking
- To be able to write a business plan, with a focus on prototype generation, competitive advantage, IPR and other relevant topics
- To be able to pitch business ideas to investors and other relevant stakeholders
- To be able to secure IPR, build prototypes and generate business plans allowing setup of startup companies within context of current innovation guidelines and?resources
Admission to the course
This module is part of the study program Life Science Innovation (honours certificate).?Only students enrolled in Life Science Innovation (honours certificate) can be admitted to this module.

LSI4005 – Introduction to innovation in life science
Teaching
The teaching consists of problem-based learning, flipped classroom, seminars/workshops with oral presentations, case studies and site visits.
Attendance at the first lecture is mandatory. You will lose your seat in the course if you do not show up or contact us on MED Student Information before the first lecture starts.
Access to teaching: A student who has completed and had compulsory instruction and coursework approved is not entitled to repeat them. However, a student who has been admitted to the course but has not completed or had the compulsory instruction and coursework approved is entitled to repeat them.
Compulsory activities:
- Attendance at 80 percent?of the course.
- Written group assignment
Compulsory participation and approved assignments are valid for 1 year only only.
Examination
Oral group presentation
The oral presentation is based on the course work.
Compulsory activities must be approve in order to be eligible to take the exam.
