INTHE4031 – Environment, Climate Change and One Health
Course content
The Anthropocene has been described as the era of human disturbance on?planet earth that is marked by environmental degradation, changing?climates and increasing pollution. These developments have major?implications on human health, on displacement and access to health care.?
This course introduces students to the intersection of health, climate change?and the environment. After completing the course, the students shall be?familiar with the concepts of, and knowledge related to, the global?distribution of environmental stressors and its implications for infectious and?non-communicable diseases and be able to critically analyse the global?interconnectedness of environmental and climate change, migration and?health.
The students’ competencies are acquired through emphasizing?multidisciplinary and multi-sectoral approaches to health and the?environment and bringing together the understanding of a wide range of?players in improving environmental health and community health.
Learning outcome
Knowledge
After completing the course, you will be able to:

Explain the essential concepts of One Health, Planetary Health, and?More-than-human Health

Describe the magnitudes and distribution of major environmental?health challenges, including pollution, nutrition deficiencies, vector?borne diseases, extreme weather hazards, and their cultural, social,?economic and ecological context

Explain the nexus of climate change and health

Demonstrate the relationship between Environmental change and?migration

Classify the major actors committed to Planetary and One health work,?including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change,?environmental protection agencies, and civil society actors advocating?environmental and health justice?

Admission to the course
Students enrolled in International Community Health (master) have priority.
Students enrolled in other Master's programmes at the Institute of Health and Society can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester?register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for?in Studentweb.

Teaching
The course consists of lectures, and seminars. In the seminars, the students?do exercises and assignments related to the course.
80% attendance in the seminars is required to be eligible to take the?exam. Attendance will be registered.
The quota for absence is meant to cover normal sickness absence and the like. You are therefore not given a valid absence from classes based on a medical certificate, even if the absence is due to obstacles for which you yourself cannot be blamed. In special cases, for example in the case of serious or long-term illness, you can apply for special needs provisions.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and?has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and?coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not?completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is?entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available?capacity.
Examination
Written school examination, individual.
80% attendance in the seminars is required to be eligible to take the exam.?

Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.?
