HMM4104B – Qualitative methods
Course description
Course content
The course aims to familiarize students with qualitative techniques common in the study of health services, enabling them to carry out their own research. The course will teach students when qualitative research is appropriate, and will also teach them to recognize the methodological choices that face the qualitative researcher. Further, the course will give a practical introduction to elite interviews and analyzes of texts.
The course aims to cover the following topics:
1) The relevance and irrelevance of qualitative research
2) Reliability, validity, and generalizability in qualitative research
3) Interviews
4) Texts

? To understand the central concepts used in qualitative research
? To understand the main methods used in qualitative research
? How to develop a qualitative research design
? How to evaluate presentations of qualitative results.

Only for master students at Health Economics, Policy and Management.

Formal prerequisite knowledge
No obligatory prerequisites beyond the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway.

Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
