HMM4104A – Research design
Course description
Course content
The course will prepare the students in writing their thesis. The course offers an introduction to research methodology and how to write scientific research reports and project proposals. There will be offered both theoretical perspectives and practical exercises.
Learning outcome
The course shall qualify students to perform empirical and theoretical studies on health care. Among other things, the course shall:
Enable students to describe scientific texts based on a general structure of such texts.
Enable students to write their own research proposal
Make students familiar with the relationship between authors and readers and their different roles.
Make students aware of ethical issues in science, in particular in health related research
Admission
Only for master students at Health Economics, Policy and Management.

Formal prerequisite knowledge
No obligatory prerequisites beyond the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway.Overlapping courses

Teaching
Lectures/seminars with individual and group exercises, and a mandatory assignment.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
Two home exams.
The home exams must be handed in electronically and will be subject to electronic screening for potential plagiarism. Failure to meet academic standards for reference to sources or plagiarism – whether intentional or not – will be prosecuted according to the University of Oslo’s regulations (Forskrift om studier og eksamener ved Universititetet i Oslo, §9) and may result in severe consequences such as expulsion from the University.
Examination support material
No examination support material is allowed.
All resources are allowed but the reference to sources must meet academic standards, confer the exam information above.
Language of examination
All written exams and term papers at the master's programme in Health Economics, Policy and Management have to be conducted in English
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.
Explanations and appeals
Resit an examination
Students who have a valid reason for not sumitting the home exam within the given deadline, may get extra time. Documentation for a valid reason must be submitted to the Department's administration before the home exam deadline.
Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
