Course content

  • Quantitative methods
  • The two variable regression model (Ordinary least square
    (OLS)- regression)
  • Hypothesis testing
  • The problem of inference
  • Simple methods for analysis of continuous and categorical data, including t-tests, non-parametric tests and tests for proportions
  • Analysis of variance
  • Multiple regression analysis
  • Relaxing the assumptions in regression analysis: Multicollinearity, heteroscedasticity and autocorrelation
  • Discrete choice models

Learning outcome

The students will be able to specify statistical hypotheses,
select the appropriate statistical methods and perform the analysis by using statistical software. In addition, they will learn to evaluate the results.

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

The students should have an introductory course in statistics

Teaching

Lectures, seminars and PC-exercise. Lectures will focus on the conceptual issues. Seminars will make students familiar with statistical programs (SPSS).

Examination

Two mandatory written assignments and a written examination.

The students must pass on both the written assignments to be allowed to sit for the written exam. If an assignments fails the student may re-deliver it within a week.

Examination support material

All written exam resources and a calculator are allowed

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
