Course content
Medical Informatics and Logitics deals with the clinical and administrative use of ICT in health care organizations and it introduces key concepts from Logistics. The course emphasizes the strategic and operational challenges related to the introduction and use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the health sector. It seeks to give students a basic understanding of the opportunities and challenges that are related to the introduction and use of ICT. Specifically, we will study the changes in work practices and their organization resulting from ICT related processes, including: a) digitalization of previously paper-based tools, b) work required to improve care processes (for example in patient logistics), and c) ”quality work” aimed at ensuring and improve the quality of health care delivery. The course will also cover ICT systems and initiatives at National level (for example public health registries, code tools, health network and other initiatives concerned with quality assurance and knowledge development) using Norway as a case but also with references to other countries, and the challenges associated with the organizational and regulation of these.
Learning outcome
Students will learn about the use of ICT as management tool in the health sector, and as a support tool for the everyday work of health personnel. After the course completion, students will:
? Have knowledge of the key ICT systems used in healthcare organizations;
? Have knowledge of National Norwegian ICT initiatives and of the key actors involved managing ICT at the National level (Helsedirektoratet, Nasjonal IKT, Kompetansesenter for IT i helsesektoren, Nasjonalt Senter for Telemedisin, Norsk Senter for Elektronisk Pasientjournal, and more);
? Have knowledge of key concepts within logistics;
? Be able to discuss current issues related to ICT-base reorganizations, improvement processes, quality work and benefit realization;
? Have knowledge of the theoretical framework that is relevant to think critically about handling complexities of large socio-technical systems;
?Have knowledge of the juridical and regulatory aspects that are relevant to issues related to ICT, including security issues, standardization processes and more.

Teaching
The course is organized in lectures, seminars, group work, and individual study.
Lectures and seminars are conducted in English.
Seminars are mandatory (minimum 4 of 6).
Group work is mandatory: it consists of 1 hour group work per week, group work log, report and final presentation. The report and presentation will be evaluated pass/no pass. Pass is required in order to take the exam. In case of “no pass” an individual short essay is required within a week.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
Written home exam
Seminar participation and group work must be approved in order to take the final examination.
For master students: specific project work will be organized for master students. They are also required to read additional literature and are expected a deeper level of critical thinking in their final essay.

Grading scale
The group work is assessed pass/fail.
Course grades are awarded on a descending scale using alphabetic grades from A to E for passes and F for fail.
An external auditor regularly evaluates the academic quality of the course, including the form of exam used on the course.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
