HME4305 – Methods for the economic analysis of costs and demand in health care
Course content
The course covers two basic topics within policy studies; analyses of the population’s demand (need) for public services and analyses of cost and efficiency variation in public service production. The following elements will be covered: Theoretical foundations for demand and cost analyses, presentations of some of the econometric and statistical tools that are used in these analyses and application of these methods to real datasets through computer based exercises. The data sets are mainly from the health care services but other kind of public service production such as primary education and kindergartens will also be discussed.
Learning outcome
The aims of the course are to give the students a basic understanding of how demand and cost analyses are used in resource allocation within the public sector and the relevance of these methodologies for public policy and planning.
