Course content
There are two main topics in the course: organizational design and perspectives on leadership and management. In the course the students learn and reflect on various perspectives on the challenges of managing healthcare organizations, along with the skills required by health care leaders. The topics that are covered include influence, communication, quality improvement, conflict resolution, strategy and motivation.
The course also delves into the fundamental aspects of organizational design, exploring both the potential and limitations of managing reforming organizations. The aim of the course is to provide the students essential managerial tools that are crucial for leaders and managers in healthcare organizations.
Learning outcome
Knowledge
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

- Describe different perspectives on employee motivation
- Explain different perspectives on team effectiveness
- Describe how different organizational models affect coordination
- Describe typical organizational features of health care organizations
- Recognize important aspects of strategy formulation in health care organizations

- Analyze leadership cases from different theoretical perspectives

- Develop competency in personal leadership

- Reflect upon how organizational design can be used to improve organizational performance

This course is only available for students at the following master programmes:
- Health Economics, Policy and Management (master)
- European Master in Health Economics and Management (master)

Teaching
A variety of contact hours (i.e. hours spent by students on activities guided by teaching staff), independent work, compulsory work placements, preparation for assessment and the time necessary for the assessment.
Compulsory assignment
Two term papers (approved/not approved) must be approved in order to sit for the exam. Will be valid for three years.
Examination
Written school examination.
Examination and grading at The Faculty of Medicine.
Examination support material
No examination support material is allowed.
Language of examination
For students at Eu-HEM: English
For students at HEPAM: The problem set will be given in English. Answers can be given in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or in English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Resit an examination
For Eu-HEM students:
An EU-hem student cannot present her or himself for the examination in a course more than two times. There will be held re-sits for EU-hem students who have failed an exam or who have legitimate absence (usually illness) in January and August. If you are entitled to a re-sit you must contact the student advisor via email no longer than one week after the result of the exam has been published.
