Course content
The course will give an introduction to applied statistics - how numbers and data are organized and understood and how to draw conclusions from them. The subject is intended for students participating in the Masters programme in Pharmacy but is open and suited for other students at the faculty of Mathematics and Natural sciences.
Learning outcome
You will learn important methods to describe and understand data, aquire knowledge of probability distributions and learn to apply different methodes to analyse data statistically. You will learn about estimation, confidence intervals, significance testing and interpretation of P-values. Both parametric and non-parametric methods will be lectured. In addition you will learn about regression-analysis and something about design of experiments.
By the end of the course your will be able to carry out simple statistical analyses and be able to understand and interpret the results.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2
And in addition one of these:
- Physics (1+2)
- Chemistry (1+2)
- Biology (1+2)
- Information technology (1+2)
- Geosciences (1+2)
- Technology and theories of research (1+2)
The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).
Recommended previous knowledge
Knowledge corresponding to 2MX from secondary school.

Teaching
Lectures, exercises and computerlab with guidance.Compulsory assignments have to be handed in and approved to gain access to the final exam. The course is given intensively for a shorter period during the spring semester.
Examination
Four hour written final exam that counts fro 100% of the grade.
Letter grading (A-F).

Examination support material
Permitted aids at the exam: Approved calculator, textbook and terminology list for STK1000. You are permitted to make handwritten notes in the textbook, but not to add any additional notes and paper.

Language of examination
Subjects taught in English will only offer the exam paper in English.
You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Explanations and appeals
Resit an examination
This subject offers new examination in the beginning of the subsequent term for candidates who withdraw during an ordinary examination or fail an ordinary examination. Deferred examinations for students who due to illness or other valid reason of absence were unable to sit for their final exams will be arranged at the same time. (These valid reasons has to be documented within given deadlines.)

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
