notes for Mon Jan 18

Again, welcome to all students, at both the master stk 4180 and PhD stk 9180 levels (we'll come back to how these two groups will have slightly different forms of examinations in the end). Our first course day is Mon Jan 18, 9-12, room 735, 7th floor of Abel Buiding.

Schweder and Hjort's "Confidence, Likelihood, Probability" book (Cambridge University Press, 2016) is still in the process of being printed and produced, and might not physically exist until March. I've therefore made a pdf of the first five chapters, based on the Oct 2015 "proof version" of the manuscript, and placed it at the course website, under "CLP". Please print out & keep a copy for yourselves; in a few weeks time I might need to remove the pdf from this site. Also note that I've placed *two conference talks* on the website, my Corcoran talk Oxford Oct 2013 and my invited ISI talk Rio July 2015. These also serve as general introductions to the course, and pointing to problems and methods we'll discuss and learn how to handle.
