STK-FYS1110 – Probability, modeling and data analysis for the physical subjects

Course content

The course gives a basic introduction to probability calculus and the use of probability models to describe stochastic variables and processes. The course also provides an introduction to statistical inference, i.e. methods for extracting information from data. Monte Carlo simulations to simulate physical processes that have elements of randomness will also be used. Simple physics experiments will be carried out, emphasizing good laboratory practice. The course will also cover simple methods and program codes for data analysis.

Learning outcome

After having completed the course

  • you know about the concept of probability and master the basic rules of probability
  • you know about random variables, and are able to find expectation, variance and covariance
  • you know about the law of large numbers and the central limit theorem
  • you know about the most common probability models
  • are you able to use Monte Carlo simulations to simulate simple stochastic processes of relevance to physics or measurements including uncertainties
  • have knowledge of simple methods for estimation, construction of confidence intervals and hypothesis testing
  • are you able to use regression analysis for model fitting
  • are you able to plan, carry out and analyze data from physics experiments
  • are you able to distinguish between random and systematic errors from insights into experimental procedures, results and data analyses
  • are you able to use programming to obtain and analyze data from physics experiments and present findings in the form of statistical quantities and as graphs and tables.

In addition to fulfilling the?Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2

And in addition one of these:

  • Physics (1+2)

  • Chemistry (1+2)

  • Biology (1+2)

  • Information technology (1+2)

  • Geosciences (1+2)

  • Technology and theories of research (1+2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by?equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies?(in Norwegian).

Overlapping courses

Teaching

6 hours per week divided between lecture, group exercises and laboratory exercises throughout the semester.

The first part of the course has joint teaching with STK1100 – Probability and Statistical Modelling.

Examination

Midterm exam which counts 1/4 towards the final grade.

Final written exam which counts 3/4 towards the final grade.?

This course has 1 mandatory assignment and 3 laboratory reports that must be approved before you can sit the final exam.
