MEK4450 – Offshore Technology

Course content

The course will give an introduction to selected topics within offshore technology with emphasis on subsea technology. The course will give an overview of standards and rules in subsea development and include practical challenges in flow assurance, subsea processing, well and drilling, marine operations the industry are facing today. The course will also give a description of future trends in oil and gas field developments and an overview of what competences in mechanics the subsea industry needs to solve their complex challenges. The course lectures consist of independent modules given by industry partners located nearby UiO; Equinor, DNV-GL, Kv?rner, FMC, IFE and GE.

Learning outcome

The course presents relevant background both theoretical and through analytical computations and practical lab demonstrations how one study and solve complex realistic problems. In the end of the course there is a written project where one solves such problems.

Teaching

On average 4 hours of lectures/exercises per week.

The course may be taught in Norwegian if the lecturer, all students at the first lecture and other involved parties agree to it.

Upon the attendance of three or fewer students, the lecturer may, in conjunction with the Head of Teaching, change the course to self-study with supervision.

Examination

Project assignment which counts 50 % towards the final grade. Final oral exam which counts 50 % towards the final grade.

When writing a project assignment make sure to familiarize yourself with the rules for use of sources and citations. Breach of these rules may lead to suspicion of attempted cheating.

Examination support material

Projekt assignment: All examination support material is allowed.

Oral examination: A presentation program, e.g. Beamer (LaTeX) or PowerPoint

Language of examination

Courses taught in English will only offer the exam paper in English. You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
