The results of the exam are now available in Inspera.
Thank you for your participation in this course. I wish you all a good summer.
There will be a question session on Wednesday 27 May at 13:30-15:00. The session will take place as a Zoom meeting. I plan to use the option "breakout rooms" in Zoom allowing for discussion with one participant at a time.
You can also send questions by email to me or to Gard Helle.
a) The curriculum has been updated to final version.
b) There will be no trial exam. The exam problems will be similar in style to problems in previous years.
c) Information on how to submit the exam set can be found here. Note that there are 6 steps in the guidelines.
It is important that you submit a single pdf-file containing your solution to the exam, and that you do not write down your name or candidate number anywhere on the submitted file. The submission process is set up to automatically link the submission file with the candidate number. If you use Word or similar to write down the solution, remember to remove personal information as explained in step 4 of the above guidelines for submission.
There was a typo in the list, it should be Section 31 not Section 30. Thanks to those who discovered this and pointed it out.
For the lecture today, open the link to the Zoom-meeting from Canvas. In this way we avoid having the Zoom-link freely accessible from the course webpage.
ENGLISH: The final examination in this course will be an individual home exam. The problem set will resemble a mandatory assignment. The starting time will be the one already set for the exam as it appears in your schedule. The deadline for submission will be 7 days (1 week) from the starting time and the submission shall be in the form of a single pdf-file uploaded in Inspera. The expected extent of the work will be limited to 2 workdays, and all examination support materials are permitted. You may talk to other students about the exam problems, but the final submitted written solution must reflect your understanding of the solution.
The grading scale will be Passed/Failed. The requirement for Passed is 40% (corresponding to the grade E). The faculty is looking for solutions to help those students without access to a computer or internet.

There will be a Zoom lecture on Thursday 2 April during 10:00-12:00 (2x45 minutes with a short break). This is the last lecture before the Easter break.
The schedule for the remaining weeks of the semester has been updated in the teaching plan. Exercises will be discussed during the Plenary session. Additionally, we will post suggested solutions to selected exercises.
The lecture is cancelled due to failing to start screen sharing in Zoom. I will post pdf-file of the notes, as usual.
The Zoom-lectures will continue today. The start time in Zoom is set for 10:00, but we start when we're ready and go on for 1 1/2 hours and finish at the latest 11:45.
Next Wednesday, 1st April, there will be a Zoom.plenary session 8:30-10:00.
Go to Schedule, click on "Lectures" until you are directed to the page describing "Resources/curriculum" and choose 24 March: there is a Zoom link there. Click on it, a window will open in your browser, wait until you can click on "Join Meeting". I will mute the microphones of the participants during the lecture, but you can use the function "raise hand" (blue icon) to ask a question or make a comment. You can also write a comment using the chat function. You can also activate the link using the invitation that was sent to you in canvas. Anyways, we don't use canvas today (that is just for sending emails). The lecture will be in Zoom.
Notes: I will continue to post pdf-files of handwritten notes. Today I posted the notes for the lecture 17 March. (As always, there are small typos which only become visible after the file is posted, so on page 3 at the bottom it should be s+m/d and s+2m/d not s+d and s+2d. )
Lectures: We will have our first lecture via Zoom/Canvas on Tuesday 24 March at 12:00-13:30. I will write on an ipad and the text will appear on your screens (similar to what is done on a smartboard). You will have to join the meeting in Zoom after logging in to Canvas. I haven't tried this before, so good luck to all of us!
Plenary sessions: We aim to post suggested solutions for selected exercises in each section. This should help with solving other exercises in the same section. It is possible that at a later stage we will start with online sessions using zoom, if there is interest...
Here you can find an announcement of summer jobs at NSM. (This is an external, not UiO, link).
Section 20: concentrate on statements of Thm 20.10, Cor 20.11, Thm 20.12, Cor 20.13. Read carefully Examples 20.14 and 20.15
Section 22: Polynomials should be familiar. Concentrate on Thm 22.4 and its proof, Examples 22.6-9 and the small section "The new approach".
Section 23: concentrate on statements of Thm 23.1, Cor. 23.3 and its proof, Cor 23.5 and its proof, statement of Cor. 23.6, Thm 23.10 and its proof, statement of Thm 23.11, Cor 23.12 and its proof. Read Examples 23.2-14.
I plan to use video conference using the platform Zoom for lectures starting 24 March. More information about Zoom at UiO can be found at /tjenester/it/telefoni-sanntid/videokonf/zoom/ but note that the first step is that you install Zoom on your personal computer. The faculty is working to integrate Zoom with Canvas, which would give a better option.
In the meantime, read in Fraleigh as indicated in the lecture plan. I will prepare a scan of notes for sections 20, 22, 23 as announced and will post them this week.
The deadline for submitting the mandatory assignment has been extended to 26 March 2020 at 14:30. Make sure to log into Canvas as soon as possible and verify that the new deadline in visible in the system.
Notes for the material in sections 20 (from Thm. 20.10), 22 and 23 will be posted at a later date.
In the text of Problem 1, remove the "and what is their order" from the last question. Thus, only answer "How many of these are cyclic?".
The lecture on Thursday March 5 will take place in Aud 4 in the usual building, VB.
Here is the assignment. A solution must be delivered in Canvas before Thursday 19 March, 2020 at 14:30.
The student representatives for this course are Leandros de Jonge, epost Leandrod"at"mail.uio.no and Erling Pettersen Vollan, email erlingpv"at"student.matnat.uio.no.
The mandatory assignment will be announced on Thursday 5 March. The deadline for submitting the solution to the assignment in Canvas is March 19.
There will be a weekly exercise session (described as Plenary Session if you follow the link under Schedule) specific to this course. Gard Helle is in charge of this session.
The format of the session will be adapted to the interest and involvement of those who participate. Some exercises will, as a rule, also be discussed at the lectures on Thursdays.
