MEF1000 – Materials and energy
Course content
Introductory on materials- and energy-related physics and chemistry. Build-up and systematics of materials with focus on modern, advanced materials and applications in energy technology. Construction materials functional materials, energy materials and nanomaterials. Structure and microstructure from single crystals to nanoparticles and composites.
Learning outcome
The student will get an overview of the most important types of materials, fundamental relations between composition, structure and properties, central areas of use, with emphasis on modern energy technologies.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
In addition to fulfilling the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway, you must either have 2MX/2MY/3MZ and 3MX/3FY/3KJ/3BI/(2KJ+3BT)/(2BI+3BT) from Norwegian upper secondary school, or have completed equivalent studies in mathematics as well as physics, or chemistry, or biology at upper secondary school or university level at another educational institution. Recommended previous knowledge
Basic chemistry (e.g. 2KJ) and physics (e.g. 2FY). One or both of more extended chemistry and physics is an advantage
Teaching
The course comprises 40 hours of lectures, 30 hours of exercises (including one project), and a laboratory course of 20 hours (4 days). Accepted laboratory course and project are required to take the final exam.
Examination
Written mid-term exam (1/2 hour) and a written final exam (3 hours). The two exams are weighted at a ratio 1:9. Partaking in the mid-term exam (with any result) is required to take the final exam. Letter marks. Allowed aids: Pocket calculator.
