KJM9940 – Solvent Extraction and Ion Exchange

Course content

This course is an introduction to the physical chemical properties of and the laws governing liquid-liquid extractions and ion Exchange processes, and how these laws are applied for separation of Chemical (organic and/or inorganic, stabile or radioactive) components in a mixture. The course gives you the theoretical foundation for separating simple, uncharged molecules, simple ions, ion complexes, or large molecules with or without covalently attached metal atoms.

Learning outcome

When you have completed this course:

  • you know the principles of liquid-liquid extraction and ion exchange
  • you can define relevant concepts and parameters
  • you know which liquid properties are essential when using these methods.
  • you are familiar with formation of chemical complexes, reaction and separation kinetics, and chemical balances for liquid extraction- and ion exchange separations.
  • you have an overview of different ion exchange materials and their physical and chemical propoerties.
  • you are familiar with modern methods for liquid-liquid extraction and ion exchange
  • you have an overview of industrial methods for ion exchange and liquid -liquid extraction and examples form radiochmical separation processes

Admission

PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.

If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.

PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.

Prerequisites

Recommended previous knowledge

To profit from this course, you need a basic understanding of chemistry. Knowledge corresponding to KJM1100 – General chemistry (continued) and KJM1120 – Inorganic Chemistry (continued) is recommended.

Teaching

The course consists of 36 hours of lectures.

The first lecture is mandatory. If you are unable to attend, the Expedition Office has to be informed in advance (phone 22 85 54 46, or e-mail ekspedisjonen@kjemi.uio.no), or else you will lose your place in the course.

Examination

Oral exam counts 100 %.

Explanations and appeals

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed exam at the beginning of the next semester.

New examinations are offered at the beginning of the next semester for students who do not successfully complete the exam during the previous semester.

We do not offer a re-scheduled exam for students who withdraw during the exam.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Evaluation

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.

The course is cancelled for spring 2016. The course is not given spring 2017.

Teaching may be cancelled if less than 5 students apply. It will still be possible for students to complete compulsory activities and exam if they wish.
