KJM5610 – Properties of Molecules
Course description
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
Course content
The course gives an introduction to the theoretical foundation for the study of molecular properties. The course serves as a background for students in quantum chemistry, for students that use quantum chemical calculations in connection with experimental work, and for students who would like to understand the theoretical foundation for the spectroscopic properties.
Learning outcome
When you have completed this course:
- you understand the theoretical foundation of rotational, vibrational and electronic spectra
- you understand the theoretical foundation of the electrical and magnetic properties of molecules
- you are familiar with time-dependent perturbation theory
- you know the principles of NMR and ESR spectroscopies.
Admission to the course
Students admitted at UiO must?apply for courses?in Studentweb. Students enrolled in other Master's Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.
Nordic citizens and applicants residing in the Nordic countries may?apply to take this course as a single course student.
If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about?admission requirements and procedures for international applicants.
Recommended previous knowledge
KJM2601 – Fysikalsk kjemi II - kvantekjemi og spektroskopi, KJM5600 – Quantum Chemistry, and at least MAT1001 – Mathematics 1 (discontinued) or MAT1050 – Mathematics for Applications 1 in mathematics.
Overlapping courses
- 10 credits overlap with KJM9610 – Properties of Molecules (discontinued).
Teaching
The course comprises 45 hours of lectures and 30 hours of exercises.
The first lecture is mandatory. If you are unable to join, the Expedition Office has to be informed in advance (phone 22 85 54 46 e-mail ekspedisjonen@kjemi.uio.no). If you fail to register as an active student for the course in either of these ways, you will loose the access to the course for the given semester.
Examination
- Final oral exam which?counts 100% towards the final grade.
It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: KJM9610 – Properties of Molecules (discontinued).
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Resit an examination
This course offers both postponed and resit of examination. Read more:
