Course content
The course deals with trace element determination and speciation analysis with focus on the use of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The following topics are included: principle, instruments, interferences and application of ICP-MS, sample treatment, validation of analytical methods, quality assurance and accreditation of analytical laboratories.
Learning outcome
After completion of this course:
- you have a thorough understanding of the principle, instruments and interferences of ICP-MS
- you are familiar with the possibilities for eliminating interferences, and you know how to optimize an ICP-MS method
- you know the possibilities and limitations for speciation- and fractionation analysis
- you can propose a sample treatment procedure and a sample introduction system for a given analytical problem
- you can explain why validation of analytical methods is important and how it can be performed
- you know what accreditation of an analytical laboratory requires

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
KJM2400 – Analytical Chemistry I or equivalent courses.
Recommended previous knowledge
KJM3400 – Analytical Chemistry II - Separation Methods or equivalent courses.

Teaching
The course consists of 30 hours of lectures.
The first lecture is mandatory. If you are unable to join, the Expedition Office has to be informed in advance (phone 22 85 54 46, or e-mail ekspedisjonen@kjemi.uio.no). If you fail to register as an active student for the course in either of these ways, you will loose the access to the course for the given semester.
Within August 10th / January 10th, international students must inform the Examination Officer at the Department of Chemistry (room VU12, phone 22855447) if English teaching is requested.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
Oral examination.
This course offers new examination in the beginning of the subsequent semester for candidates who fail or withdraw during an ordinary examination for students who will take their exam spring 2013.
From fall 2013, the following rules apply:
This course offers new examination in the beginning of the subsequent term for candidates who fail an ordinary examination. Deferred examinations for students who due to illness or other valid reason of absence were unable to sit for their final exams will be arranged at the same time. (These valid reasons has to be documented within given deadlines.). We do not offer new examination for students who withdraw from the exam.

Examination support material
No examination support material is allowed.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Explanations and appeals
Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
