Infrared and Raman spectroscopy

Curriculum: Notes in IR and Raman spectroscopy (available free of charge to registered students), additional lecture notes and tutorials.
Activities: Lectures in Infrared and Raman spectroscopy, laboratory tutorials and exercises, reports from laboratory work.
Learning requirements:- Basic understanding of the principles of Infrared and Raman spectroscopy.
- Basic understanding of the working principles of Infrared and Raman-spectrometers.
- Understanding of the Beer-Lambert law.
- Basic understanding of the concept of normal modes of vibration.
- Basic understanding of the ro-vibrational spectra of diatomics.
- Basic understanding of the vibrational selection rules for polyatomic molecules.
- Understanding of the similarities and differences between IR- and Raman-spectroscopy.
- Ability to record and interpret IR- and Raman-spectra.
Evaluation: Passed/failed based upon written laboratory reports. All tutorials must be completed and accepted. Final date for approval is September 30.
Schedule:Thursday 15 September:
- 09.15-11.00: Lectures in IR-spectroscopy (Obligatory), V254.
- 12.15-17.00: Introduction to the FTIR instrument (Obligatory), V223.
Thursday 22 September:
- 09.15-11.00: Lectures in Raman-spectroscopy (Obligatory), V254.
- 12.15-17.00: Introduction to the Raman spectrometer (Obligatory), V213 and V244.
The laboratories will be open 16-30 September:
- 09.15-17.00: Laboratory tutorials (Obligatory).
