Decomposition in microwave oven - a pretreatment method for determination of elements using atomic spectrometric methods. Target group: M

The module is mainly aimed at students that will need to decompose samples before analyses using ICP-OES, ICP-MS or AAS.

Learning goal:

Be able to find the best conditions and perform decomposition of various materials in microwave oven as pre-treatment for determination of trace elements using atomic spectrometric methods. This involves knowledge of instrument (hardware and software of the microwave oven), operation principle, acid properties, safety aspects and quality control.

Literature

“The art and science of microwave sample preparation for trace and ultratrace elemental analysis” (Ch. 2 in “Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry”, Ed. A. Montaser)

“Guidelines for microwave acid digestion” (Ethos 900 User manual), p1-9
