Course content

This course gives you an introduction to mechanisms that rules the properties of functional materials. A selection of these properties will be described and connections to atomic arrangements, electronic structure, and chemical bonding situations will be shown. Specifically, electric conductivity, as well as optical and magnetic properties, will be handled. This course is building on MENA2000 – Fundamental structure of solid materials,?and its concepts are extensions to previous knowledge.

Learning outcome

After completing the course, you can:

  • correlate between functional properties and crystal structure, chemical bonds, and electronic structures.
  • describe non-stoichiometry, solid solutions, and in what way these will affect crystal structure and material properties.
  • describe magnetic ordering phenomena and magnetic ground states.
  • explain concepts and principles of electric polarization in materials, such as ferro-electrics and dielectrics. Further, the coupling between magnetism and electric polarization will be explained in the example multiferroics.
  • explain electronic- and hole-conductivity in metallic and non-metallic materials, including discussions on crystal imperfections and excitations.
  • explain optical properties from interaction between photons and matter, including local descriptions such as crystal field and their distortions.

Admission to the course

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for?in Studentweb.

Special admission requirements

In addition to fulfilling the?Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2

And in addition one of these:

  • Physics (1+2)
  • Chemistry (1+2)
  • Biology (1+2)
  • Information technology (1+2)
  • Geosciences (1+2)
  • Technology and theories of research (1+2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by?equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies?(in Norwegian).

Teaching

The course compromises 6 hours of teaching per week.

  • 60 hours of lectures
  • 30 hours of colloquia

There is 1 compulsory assignments - oral seminar. Must be approved?before you can take the final exam. Have to be present at a certain number of seminars of fellow students.

Mandatory?assignments are valid for 6 semesters after they have been approved. Attendance at the first lecture is mandatory, including students on waiting list.?If you are unable to attend the first lecture, you must notify the Department of Chemistry before the start of the lecture, otherwise, your course registration will be canceled.

Examination

  • Final oral exam which counts 100 % towards the final grade.?

This course has mandatory exercises that must be approved before you can take the final exam.

Examination support material

Language of examination

You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F?is a fail. Read more about?the grading system.

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are?offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
