KJM9351 – Thermodynamics
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
Course content
Basic theoretical description of irreversible processes. The Gibb’s equation. Flows and forces. Phenomenological equations. Onsager’s reciprocity relations. Some information about Gibb’s ensemble method in statistical thermodynamics. Solid matters. Real gasses, introduction to fluid theory and to irreversible statistical mechanics by using Monte-Carlo and molecular dynamical methods.
Learning outcome
After having completed this course:
- you have a thorough knowledge of thermodynamics enabling you to read scientific literature within this field
- you kan employ thermodynamic calculations in your own research work
- you can compile and give a seminar about a given topic.

Oral examination counts 100%. You also have to prepare and give a seminar on a given topic. The seminar has to be approved before you can take the exam.
