Dear all,

the exercises for Ch. 4 have been uploaded. This time, I have not given you a lot of defect equations etc. to write....you have done a lot of that already in the preceding chapters. Instead I have just made a few qualitative questions and things...mostly to make you think and perhaps read a little in the Chapter. At the end I have SUGGESTED that you try to sketch a full Brouwer diagram for YOUR material. That will for some of you be too difficult....then I have suggested easier substitutes. For others it will be trivial and a little boring...don't feel that you have to do this....do only as much as you feel you need - if any - to test your understanding.

Ch3 slides are uploaded. Enjoy.

Ch. 3 is uploaded. The PowerPoint slides will come in a day or so. Now it is getting tougher. I suggest you first read the initial pages on thermodynamics....this is differently and only shortly mentioned in the PowerPoint slides. If this part is difficult for you...don't give up...it IS difficult. But the following parts are more important, simpler, and treated in much detail also in the PowerPoint in sync with the text. The checkpoint exercise set for Ch2 has been uploaded.

I have also in this semester page updated the compendium and slides files for Ch1 based mainly on student feedback on misprints. However, the changes are not essential and I strongly recommend that you do not waste time and money and paper to reprint the new sets if you have already done so.

Dear all. Chapter 2 is finally uploaded, as compendium chapter pdf and as slides (ppt and pdf). The slides this time contains a lot of illustrations and additional explanation that are not in the text, and thus forms hopefully a useful complement.

The homework exercise will be added within the weekend.

Most of you have submitted the Exercises - well done! I believe I have returned them all, with comments. Let me know if that is not the case. For those of you who didn't submit Chapter 1 exercises, I still urge you to do so, even if it is optional, of course.

Cheers, Truls.

Dear all; Many (but not me) noticed the missing figures in the ppt. This was - as many of you helped me understand - a result of the figure being linked instead of contained in the file. This, in turn, was because I copied the file from the compendium, in which I use linking throughout. I should have anticipated it, but didn't and instead learned the lesson once and for all plus wasted everyone's time. Sorry. Anyway: New file is uploaded. I also included a pdf of it in case someone prefers that. Regards, Truls (otherwise mostly snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef - no defects - just perfect!).

Dear all,

The web-based teaching in KJM5120/9120 defects and Reactions now starts.

I have uploaded three documents on Fronter and will put them on the course semesterpage also later.

The three documents are all for Chapter 1. You will get new documents for each of the 7 chapters.

The ppt file contains slides for the intro to the course and then a lecture for Chapter 1. I suggest you look through this first.

The pdf file is the text for the chapter. I suggest you read this next.

The doc file contains a set of easy exercises. This is acheck for you and me that you are on track. It is optional, but I suggest that you save the file, do them elelectronically, and send the file to me either on Fronter or simply by email at truls.norby@kjemi.uio.no. Please title the email

KJM5120-Ch1-YourName

Get it done preferably within one week. I will return it with comments.

You may also try some of the Problems at the end of the...

Dear all, welcome to KJM5120/9120 - Defect Chemistry and Reactions. The teaching Spring 2009 will take place in two stages. The first - in February and March - will take place via the Web from my remote location on sabattical in Sydney. Expectedly this will be in the form of pdf curriculum updates, powerpoint presentations, and exercises. After I return in Easter, we will have 5 days intensive course on dates in April/May that we come to agreement on later on. For questions, contact me at truls.norby@kjemi.uio.no. Regards, Truls Norby.
