UNIK4350 – Fiberoptic broadband networks

Course content

Propagation of signals in optical fibers. Componenents: Transmitter, coupler, switch, isolator, filter, optical amplifier, detector. Modulation, demodulation and detection. Transmission systems: Transmitter, receiver, amplifier, crosstalk, dispersion, fiber nonlinearities. Traditional Networking: SDH, ATM, Ethernet, FDDI and IP protocols, network layer models. Optical networking: Broadcast-and-select,wavelength routing, control and management.

Learning outcome

To give an account of the theoretical and practical basis for fibre optic transmission technique.
