UNIK4320 – Quality management and metrology

Course content

The elements of a quality system, quality manual, operating procedures, validation of measurements methods, traceability, non-conformances, corrective and preventive action, quality audits, methods for solving quality problems and achieving quality improvements, international quality standards, total quality management, certification and accreditation. Metrological units and their realisation, calibration and traceability in metrology, evaluation of uncertainty, statistical process controls. National and international infrastructure for metrology and quality management.

Learning outcome

The course will give the students an understanding of the principles and practical realisation of quality management. Special emphasis is placed upon the metrological basis and traceable calibration of measuring instruments and uncertainty in measurements. The course will also give insight in the cooperation to achieve international confidence in measurement results and certificates by accreditation. The course is suitable as part of a M.Sc. study or as continuing education.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

None.

Recommended previous knowledge

ST 101, FYS 116, FYS 204, FYS 221, FYS 223 at UiO, or equivalent from NTNU or laboratory courses in other fields. Experience from practical laboratory work in industry or research is an advantage.

Teaching

35 hours lecture, 3 hours tutorials, 4 visits to industrial companies/research laboratories, total 50 hours in one semester.

Examination

Written or oral depending on the number of students. Grades scale A-F.
