TEK9110 – Building and Monitoring Communication Networks

Course content

This course is extending the knowledge of PhD candidates into the areas of Mobile and Wireless Systems, including Design, Network Management, Deployment and Trouble Shooting. The course is based on the evaluation of existing technologies, takes into account specific challenges of radio communications, including coverage and capacity, and addresses the economy in the networks.

The main goal of the course is to work with scientific literature and analyse advantages and weaknesses of suggested approaches. Candidates will be asked to select topics, work through the related literature, perform an analysis of the literature, present the results towards the other students and discuss the advantages and shortcomings.

Topics:

  • Principles of radio propagation and radio interaction
  • Principles of Wifi (802.11) and mobile (2G, 3G, 4G, 5G) networks
  • Network management
  • Critical parameter assessment both for coverage, capacity, and network monitoring
    • Future network concepts

Learning outcome

After completing the course, you will

  • have detailed knowledge on upcoming radio technologies for wireless and mobile communication systems, covering distances from a few cm to some kilometres
  • be able to use this knowledge to design wireless communication systems
  • have theoretical and practical knowledge on how to monitor and configure wireless networks
  • know several advanced topics within the field, and have in-depth knowledge of at least one of these, as well as experience on passing on this knowledge to other students with a basic knowledge in the subject

If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.

PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must?apply for a position as a visiting student?within a given deadline.

It is recommened that you have some knowledge on wave theory, fundamentals of data communication.

Teaching

The course has 3 hours of lectures every week throughout the semester. There will be a presentation of research topics for participants, and work on a network simulator.

PhD candidates will be required to submit an essay and/or give a presentation to the rest of the group on a curriculum-related topic. The essay/presentation must be approved in order to take the final exam.

The introductory work is mandatory for the participants, as it forms the basis for a group work, analysing selected topics in dedicated areas. The envisaged areas are:

1. Mobile coverage, capacity and cost aspects of future mobile and wireless networks

2. Novel models for access network ownership, e.g. a model where a provider has just an access network, and collaborates with operators on handling the core network.

3. Internet light for all, providing free access to information for everyone to foster digital inclusion and the sustainability goals of the Agenda 2030.

4. Wireless Network management for future services. Management will include monitoring of a real-life wireless/Wifi installation and analysing the network impact of services and applications.?

Examination

  • Presentation and assessment of a scientific paper counts 20% towards the final grade.
  • A final oral exam counts 80% towards the final grade.

The mandatory assignments and/or presentation must be approved in order to take the exam.

When writing your exercises make sure to familiarize yourself with the rules for use of sources and citations. Breach of these rules may lead to suspicion of attempted cheating.

It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for (one of) the following course(s):

No examination support material is allowed.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass, the original examination.
