TEK5520 – Cyber Security of Industrial Systems
Course description
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
Course content
The course gives you knowledge of "state-of-the-art" technology in sensor and mobile systems used in industrial communication; oil and gas, smart grids, industrial automation. Furthermore, the course is based on real-world challenges in the industry, such as protection against threats in sensor networks used in advanced metering infrastructure, and methods for protecting sensors and devices.?The course will also touch on advanced security technologies for mobile communication systems, including security and privacy protection in near-field communications (NFC).
Learning outcome
After completion of the course, you will have achieved the following competence:
- understanding of how key information security concepts and principles are addressed in industrial communication networks that include sensors and mobile systems
- knowledge of relevant security standards in industrial networks, as well as mitigation techniques against security threats, intrusion detection and protection mechanisms, and security incidence monitoring and response methodologies
- adaption of security standards for selected industrial scenarios
- ability to discuss the applicability of security mechanisms in industrial networks, and to explain the security challenges in a system of systems, where various communication technologies such as wirelessHART, Zigbee, Mobile Communication Networks such as 2G, 3G & 4G, WiMAX, WLAN/WiFi are used to communicate sensors and actuators at field level
- analyzing skills in security incidences and possible mitigation techniques based on selected industrial areas such as smart grids, including industrial control systems
Admission to the course
Students admitted at UiO must?apply for courses?in Studentweb. Students enrolled in other Master's Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.
Nordic citizens and applicants residing in the Nordic countries may?apply to take this course as a single course student.
If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about?admission requirements and procedures for international applicants.
Recommended previous knowledge
We recommend that you have knowledge corresponding to IN2120 – Information Security, TEK5500 – Security in distributed systems (discontinued) or?UNIK4190 – Informasjonsteori og feilkontroll (discontinued).
Overlapping courses
- 10 credits overlap with UNIK4740 – Information Security in Industrial Sensor and Mobile Systems (continued).
- 10 credits overlap with TEK9520 – Cyber Security of Industrial Systems.
- 10 credits overlap with UNIK9740 – Information Security in Industrial Sensor and Mobile Systems (continued).
Teaching
The teaching includes?3 hours of lectures per week throughout the semester.
Examination
- A final oral exam counts 60% towards the final grade.
- Two assignments or oral presentations?during the semester count 40% towards the final grade. These must be passed before you can sit the final exam.
In case of a large number of candidates, the final oral exam may be a written exam instead.
It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses:
- TEK9520 – Cyber Security of Industrial Systems
- UNIK4740 – Information Security in Industrial Sensor and Mobile Systems (continued)
- UNIK9740 – Information Security in Industrial Sensor and Mobile Systems (continued)
Examination support material
No examination support material is allowed.
Language of examination
Courses taught in English will only offer the exam paper in English. You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Resit an examination
Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.
