TEK5380 – Project in Renewable Energy

Course content

In this course there will be established project groups of 3-4 people that are to work together with a project over one whole semester.?The topic for the project will be within renewable energy, energy storage in batteries and hydrogen and/or solutions for zero-emission transport. The project will be based on an actual problem and/or concern a possible improvement of a product or service in a private or public company. ?

Learning outcome

After completing the course, you will have new knowledge on

  • advanced energy systems with different sub-systems and key technologies
  • use of relevant methods and tools for system analysis and project management
  • acquisition of data and analysis of different sources of information and use of these to structure and formulate professional arguments; in other words you will learn creative and critical thinking
  • how to be a constructive contributor in teamwork
  • presentation and communication of results from a large project, written and oral, to both specialists and a broader audience

Admission to the course

This course only admits students enrolled in the master's programme?Renewable Energy Systems (master) at the Department of Technology Systems.

It will be an advantage with some prior knowledge in the areas of

  • renewable energy systems, primarily systems based on solar cells or wind turbines
  • energy storage technologies, primarily within batteries, but also some knowledge about conversion to/from hydrogen via low-temperature water electrolysis / fuel cells is recommended
  • Microsoft Office, including Project Manager og Visio
  • modeling and/or data processing in Matlab, Python, EES, etc. (some experience)

Teaching

The course has 3 hours of lectures and supervision of the group assignments per week throughout the semester.

The groups will get one internal supervisor and one external contact to represent the "customer" in the project.

The projects will focus on several cases relevant to organizations and companies in the Oslo area. Some field work is to be expected, for instance visits to companies.

The course has 2?mandatory assignments in the project which must be approved in order to take the final exam: a progress report and a final report

The course lectures are given at the Department of Technology Systems in Kjeller Research Park. See the schedule for the student bus from Campus Blindern.

Examination

  • A final oral exam, in the form of a 45-minute presentation, counts 100% towards the final grade.
  • A mandatory written progress report and final report, to be written during the semester, must have been approved before you can sit the final exam.

Examination support material

The students are free to use all kinds of aids in the reports and presentation, but the main content in the written and oral work presented must be based on independent work.

Language of examination

Courses taught in English will only offer the exam paper in English. You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F?is a fail. Read more about?the grading system.

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are?offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass, the original examination.
