TEK4020 – Software Defined Radio

Course content

The course provides a broad overview of standards, open-source SW tools and processing platforms for software implementation of radio communications and sensor functionality. You will also get an understanding of receiver-, sensor- and transmitter-architectures. Through laboratory exercises and programming examples the course provides detailed knowledge about synthesizing communications- and sensor-functionality on a selected platform.

Learning outcome

After completing the course, you:

  • have knowledge about the Software Communications Architecture and other relevant standards
  • have knowledge about and can use the open-source tool-set GNU radio
  • have knowledge about different types of processing elements that are being used on platforms for software-defined radio
  • understand receiver-, sensor- and transmitter-architectures
  • understand analogue-to-digital and digital-to-analogue conversion, as well as sample-rate conversion
  • can synthesize communications- and sensor-functionality on a platform

Prerequisites from IN1900 – Introduction to Programming with Scientific Applications or IN1000 – Introduction to Object-oriented Programming or equivalent basic course in programming are advantageous.

Prerequisites in signal processing corresponding to IN3190 – Digital Signal Processing?will make it easier to follow this?course.

Teaching

The course includes?2 hours of lectures and?1 hour of tutorial every week throughout the semester.

This course has 2 mandatory?exercises, which are solved either in groups of two or individually. The two mandatory?exercises must be approved before you can sit the final exam.

Examination

  • Final oral exam which counts 100% towards the final grade.

In case of many?students, the?final exam may be written.

This?course has 2 mandatory assignments, which must be approved before you can sit the?final exam.

Examination support material

No examination support material is allowed.

Language of examination

Subjects taught in English will only offer the exam paper in English. You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
