EXAM INFO for INF5020, AUTUMN 2004

The INF5020 ?exam? consists of three essays and a term project. You should note the following:

?    All work is individual work, not group work.

?    All work is to be handed in to Erek G?kt?rk (and NOT to Naci Akk?k) no later than 16:00 o?clock on the announced deadline.

?    ALWAYS send by e-mail (erek at ifi dot uio dot no (replace at with @ and dot with .)). NEVER deliver on paper!

?    Please don?t forget that these are ?exams? and that all the rules that apply to regular exams apply to the essays and the term project as well. This means that you cannot delay handing in an essay or the term project unless you have agreed with the instructors or the administration in advance, or unless you have a medical report (legeattest) confirming that you are incapable of delivering your work.

?   The deadlines are as follows:

o       ESSAY 1: Friday 28th September 2004 (week 39), 16:00 o?clock.

o       ESSAY 2: Friday 22nd October 2004 (week 43), 16:00 o?clock.

o       ESSAY 3: Friday 19th November 2004 (week 47), 16:00 o?clock.

o       FINAL TERM PROJECT: Wednesday 15th December 2004 (week 51), 16:00 o?clock.

?    NOTE that the term project date may change, but any changes will be announced both in class and on the fall 2004 pages of the course (http://www.uio.no/studier/emner/matnat/ifi/INF5020/h04/).

?    All work shall be graded, except for student presentation.

?    The grading style is A-to-F (character codes).

?    The essays are expected to be no less than 3 pages and no more than 5 pages.

?    The essays weigh 20% (of the semester grade) each. Since there are three essays, this means that 60% of each participant?s grade will be decided by his/her essays.

?    The term project is expected to be no less than 8 pages and no more than 12 pages.

?    The term project weighs 40% (of the semester grade).

?    Each participant will choose a subject for his/her term project and deliver it to Erek G?kt?rk latest Friday 15th October 2004 (week 42) by 16:00 o?clock.

?    You will get notice of acceptance/rejection of your subject within the next week (latest Friday 22nd October 2004, the next week, by 16:00). If your subject is accepted, you can start writing.

?    YOU CAN DECIDE, GET AN ACCEPTANCE AND START WRITING ANYTIME, YOU DON?T HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL 22ND OCTOBER!

?    If your subject is rejected, you will need to try again, but remember that every day or week used in deciding is lost from the time you have available until the final deadline.

?    IT IS A VERY GOOD IDEA TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR INSTRUCTORS AS SOON AS YOU COME UP WITH A SUBJECT (even during the first week).

?    All three essays and the term project will need to be in the style of a regular paper, with a proper title, abstract, references etc.

?    It is obligatory to use the ?Lecture Notes in Computer Science? or LNCS template when writing your three essays and your term project (term paper). This will also ensure that you have all that is needed in a regular paper.

?    LNCS has ready made templates for LaTeX, LateX2e, TeX, Framework and MS Word users. You can download them from the LNCS site: http://www.springeronline.com/sgw/cda/frontpage/0,11855,5-164-2-72376-0,00.html.

?    If you are using MS Word, you can also use the following three files:

o       File sv-lncs.pdf is a short manual of the MS Word template.

o       File sv-lncs.dot is the MS Word template.

o       File typeinst.doc contains short instructions and is written in the LNCS format, so that you can use it as an example and a template (just open the file, save it under the name of your choice, and start editing it to fill it with your own content, replacing what is there).

HAPPY WRITING!

PLEASE DO ASK WHENEVER YOU NEED TO!
