SIFI2000 – Foundations of Digitalization

Course content
This course provides a high-level understanding of digital technologies and programming, focusing on tools, computation, algorithms, and data processing. It covers core aspects of digitalization that enable you to theoretically structure and discuss digital transformation processes across various sectors and disciplines.
The course explores the wider implications of digitalization, emphasizing its impact on society and the environment.
You will gain the vocabulary and critical thinking skills necessary to evaluate the effects of digitalization within your own field of study.
This course is the mandatory introductory course of the Digitalization Certificate and introduces the concepts and terms you will meet in elective courses.
Learning outcome
After completing this course, you can:
· Describe examples of digital technologies and how they can be employed to address information needs.
· Explain and apply basic principles of computer programming, algorithmic thinking, and data analysis.
· Explain what digitization, digital innovation, digitalization and digital transformation mean.
· Discuss social and environmental impacts of digitalization.
· Form a comprehensive view on digitalization though interdisciplinary group work.
Admission to the course
You must be a registered student for the Digitalization certificate to take this course.
You must be a bachelor-student and have completed 60 ECTS of your bachelorprogram prior to enrolling in this course.
Teaching
Two hours of lectures and two hours with seminars. The lectures will be a mix of in-class lectures and video-recorded lectures.
It's highly recommended to attend the first lecture as important information will be given.
Mandatory assignment which must be approved in order to qualify for the final exam:
· individual assignments,
· deliverables from a group project
All assignments must be approved to qualify for the exam, and they must be approved the same semester as the exam.
Examination
4 hour written digital exam.
Language of examination
The exam questions will be in English, and you may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale.
