INF9820 – Language technological applications
Course description
Course content
The subject might vary. The main emphasis will be on one or more applications like machine translation, information retrieval or dialogue systems.
Learning outcome
The student should acquire a thorough knowledge of one or more subjects in computational linguistics and be able to carry out a research project within the field.
In addition, each PhD candidate will be given an extended curriculum within the field/research area of the course. The syllabus must be approved by the lecturer so that the student can be admitted to the final exam.
Admission
PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.
If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.
PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.

Teaching
2 hours lecturing and 2 hours group work each week. Seminar with active participation.
There will be mandatory assignments which must be accepted in order to take the exam.
Examination
4 h written exam.
Mandatory assignments must be approved in order to take the exam.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
It will also be counted as one of your three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: HUMIT4722/HUMIT4722MN.
