INF9620 – Numerical methods for partial differential equations
Course description
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
Course content
Design of finite difference and finite element methods for solving differential equations, theoretical and empirical analysis of accuracy and stability, programming
techniques, verification and software testing, applications, project work.
Learning outcome
The student should learn the background to, and get an introduction to, the use of numerical methods and software to solve partial differential equations.
Admission
PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.
If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.
PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
No obligatory prerequisites beyond the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway.
Overlapping courses
10 credits overlap with INF5620 – Numerical methods for partial differential equations (continued)
9 credits IN-NMFPD.
Teaching
2 hours with lectures and 2 hours with exercises each week. There are mandatory assignments.
Examination
Oral exam.
Note that the exam in INF9620 will be more extensive than the one in INF5620.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.
