INF9430 – Advanced digital systems design
Course description
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
Course content
The course provides an in-depth coverage of systematical development and synthesis of advanced digital integrated circuits with emphasis on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology. The course will cover digital hardware system design, digital arithmetic, dynamic partial reconfiguration of FPGA, high level synthesis and functional verification.
Learning outcome
The candidate should after this course have an in-depth knowledge of digital integrated circuit hardware design. The emphasis is on FPGA technology, but most of the design techniques can also be applied to ASIC devices. The student should be familiar with the latest state-of-the-art system on chip (SoC) design methodologies, including high-level synthesis and partial run-time reconfiguration. Students should be able to learn the benefits and drawbacks of the various design methods for solving a problem. Through practical assignments, experience will be achieved from both using tools as well as designing their own system.
Admission
PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.
If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.
PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.
Prerequisites
Recommended previous knowledge
Experience with digital integrated circuit design, VHDL and FPGA as given in the course
INF3430 – Digital systemkonstruksjon (continued) - Digital systemkonstruksjon is highly recommended.
Overlapping courses
10 credits overlap with INF5430 – Advanced digital systems design (continued)
Teaching
2 hours of lectures and possibly 2 hours of lectures/assignment training per week.
Mandatory assignments. One additional assignment compared to INF5430 (roughly 20% extra load).
Examination
Oral or written exam (4 h). (Written if the student number is high.)
Mandatory assignments must be completed during the course; if these are not accepted, the
student may not take the final exam.
Examination support material
No examination support material is allowed.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.
Explanations and appeals
Resit an examination
Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.
Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
Other
Note that the first lecture is mandatory.
