INF-BIO9120 – High Throughput Sequencing technologies and bioinformatics analysis
Course description
Course content
The course provides knowledge of high throughput sequencing technologies and the analysis of data from various sequencing platforms and applications. Control of quantity and quality of data, analysis of small RNA-seq and mRNA-seq, de novo genome assembly, and variant calling. The course will also make use of the frameworks Galaxy and The Genomic Hyperbrowser in the analyses.
Learning outcome
- The students will achieve a basic understandingof how to analyse different genomic data using different high throughput sequencing technologies.
- You will be able to perform quantity- and quality control of sequencing data.
- You can perform analysis of data from exome sequencing, micro RNA and mRNA sequences.
- You can perform variant calling and identify SNPs and indels.
- You have knowledge about de novo assembly of genomes.
- You are able to use the frameworks Galaxy and The Genomic Hyperbrowser.
- You have knowledge on current methods
Admission
PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.
If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.
PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.
Prerequisites
Recommended previous knowledge
We recommend that students with informatics background has INF4350 and students with a background from biology or molecular biology has MBV3070.
Overlapping courses
5 credits overlap with INF-BIO5120 – High Throughput Sequencing technologies and bioinformatics analysis (continued)
Teaching
Two weeks of intensive teaching during the semester.
2/3 attendance is required.
Examination
Home exam. The candidates will get a additional curriculum and extended home exam (one extra assignment) compared to the master version of the course (INF-BIO5120).
