IN9620 – Interaction with AI and autonomous systems

Schedule, syllabus and examination date

Course content

The course introduces the evolving interdisciplinary research?area of?Interaction with Artificial Intelligence and autonomous?systems to students who are interested in interaction,?design, and use of?digital systems.

The course consists of?3?modules.

The first?module covers the?history of use and interaction with AI and autonomous systems.??Concepts and definitions of AI, autonomous?systems, and machine learning is opened?up and discussed. Universal Design of AI?systems and autonomous systems, where human autonomy and machine autonomy meet is?a part of this module. In addition,?accountability, transparency, explainability, and privacy will be introduced in this module.

In the second?module, students will learn the foundations and state of the art in the design of?Interaction with AI and autonomous systems. This is done by working with design?guidelines and principles for AI-infused systems. In addition, the students?will work with the basic technologies and algorithms for current AI and autonomous?systems.?

The third?module is a reflection, writing, and review module. In this module, the students will refine and?work with feedback from the two modules in order to present final?deliveries.

Learning outcome

After successful completion of this course, you can:

  • explain and present the history?of interaction with AI and autonomous systems
  • apply and?discuss Universal Design of AI and?autonomous systems
  • explain the concepts: accountability,?transparency, explainability and privacy in the context of use of AI and autonomous?systems.
  • apply?and discuss design guidelines?for interaction with AI?and autonomous systems
  • conceptualize, design, and evaluate?a?prototype together with users
  • differentiate between macro,?meso and micro level use of AI and autonomous systems
  • write and present an academic article (research article in the NordiCHI format) on the topic of interaction with AI and autonomous systems

Admission to the course

PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through?Studentweb.

If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.

PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must?apply for a position as a visiting student?within a given deadline.

Teaching

There will be two-hour lectures pr. week.

Submission of mandatory assignments is required.?Read more about requirements for submission of assignments, group work and legal cooperation under guidelines for mandatory assignments

Examination

A final group report and a final individual report delivered after module 3 will be evaluated on the?pass/not pass scale. In addition, PhD-students will have to?write and present an academic article as part of the course.

All parts of the exam must be passed, and they must be passed in the same semester.

To be able to take the exam, all compulsory assignments in the subject must be approved and approved?during the same semester.

It will also be counted as one of?your three?attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sat the exam for IN5620 – Interaction with AI and autonomous systems, or if you sat the exam for IN5480 – Specialization in Research in Design of IT in the periode?Autumn 2019-Autumn 2021.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about?the grading system.
