IN9330 – Health Management Information Systems

Course content

A well-functioning health management information system provides reliable and timely data to support health managers in decision-making. Unfortunately, poorly defined information needs, data quality issues, poor data analysis tools and fragmentation of health information often leads to information non-use by health decision makers around the world. You will learn about principles, approaches, standards and IT solutions for improving health management information systems in a global health context.

Learning outcome

After completing this course you:

  • have insights in the purpose of health management information systems and their role in the health system as a whole;
  • have an understanding of the relationship between data quality and data use for evidence-based management;
  • can make recommendations concerning the appropriate use of information and communication technologies for data storage, dissemination, and presentation;
  • can describe and discuss common challenges associated with the collection, storage, integration and dissemination of various types of health data such as patient data, health service data and resource data;
  • can describe standards, principles, processes, and tools for designing an action-oriented health management information system;
  • recognize risks and problematize ethical dilemmas associated with centralized digital storage of health data;
  • can reflect on the strengths and challanges associated with the transdisciplinary of health management information systems as a practice field;

Admission to the course

Capacity limit 50 students.

Students on the masters programme International Community Health and Health Economics, Policy and Management are allowed to take the course.

If the number of enrolled students is higher than the course capacity, they will be ranked as followed:

  1. Students from the Department of Informatics with IN9330 on their study plan agreement.
  2. Number of ECTS credits.

Overlapping courses

Teaching

The lectures will be in the form of computer lab training with supervision. There will be one mandatory group presentation.

There is compulsory attendance for IN9330. PhD students may be requested to participate in the course teaching by presenting use cases or assisting student groups in the lab.

Examination

Written home exam.

Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about?the grading system.

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are?offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester. Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
