Title: Remote Monitoring of Disability: A Case Study of Mobility Aid in Rohingya Refugee Camps

Suzana Brown, State University of New York, South Korea

Date & time: October 11 at 10.15

Location: OJD 9460 & https://uio.zoom.us/j/63413211886

Abstract: The Rohingya are considered to be one of the most victimized populations in the world who faced decades-long persecution from the Myanmar government. Over one million Rohingya refugees have relocated to neighboring Bangladesh after fleeing torture, physical violence, rape, and murder. Refugees typically face tremendous obstacles, but these challenges are amplified for refugees with disabilities. Mobility concerns for Rohingya refugees with physical disabilities are notably pressing in the Cox’s Bazar camps in Bangladesh. The terrain in the camps is steep, muddy, and unstable making it impassable for refugees with mobility issues. To address the mobility challenges of Rohingya refugees with physical disabilities, the project team from SUNY Korea and a Bangladeshi NGO (YPSA) designed an alternate crutch/cane shoe to provide a safer option for disabled or injured refugees who walk in challenging environments. Professor Brown was a PI for this project and her research team obtained survey data from 100 participants, as well as interviews, and gait analyses from 14 participants. In this seminar, she will present the results and lessons learned from this project.
