Course content
The course gives an introduction to CMOS image sensor chips used in digital cameras. The entire signal chain from light?to jpeg compressed image will be covered, incl. pixels and readout circuits, A/D conversion, digital image processing, and input/output interfaces.
Learning outcome
After completing this course, you?ll have:
- basic knowledge of analog and digital circuits used in cameras
- basic knowledge of construction and analyzation?of pixels and readout circuits in CMOS
- basic knowledge of digital image signal processing blocks such as black level compensation, noise filtering, color processing, and output tone mapping
- basic knowledge of high dynamic range image sensors
- basic knowledge of simulation and modelling of imaging sensor output
- understanding of how noise and signal-to-noise ratio define image quality

IN5350 and IN9350?will be assessed together in regards to?the number of admissions, with?priority given to PhD candidates with IN9350 in an approved study plan.
Recommended previous knowledge
Prerequisites in analog/mixed-signal CMOS construction,?digital imaging and linear circuit electronics are recommended.

Teaching
2 hours of lectures per week, followed by 1 hour with mandatory group exercises each week.
The course includes a mandatory image sensor relevant design project where the student can choose either analog design project, digital design project, or algorithm design project. Submission and approval?of the mandatory project assignment must be done prior to the exam.
Examination
Oral or 4 hours written digital exam, dependent on the number of students.
All mandatory assignments must be approved prior to the exam.
It will also be counted as one of?your three?attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses:?IN9350 – CMOS Image Sensor Design, INF5442 – Image Sensor Circuits and Systems (continued), INF9442 – Image Sensor Circuits and Systems (continued), INF5441 – CMOS billedsensor (continued)
Language of examination
You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Resit an examination
Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester. Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
