Lecture 01 - Intro

Dear student, here you are at the introductory lecture of the autumn 2020 course IN2020 Research Methods in Interaction Design. Please find the lecture's modules below. You can follow the given structure, but also revisit certain modules later on. This virtual lecture does only fill two times 45 minutes if you actually engage with the included little student activities. You are not asked to 'consume' a monologue here, but learn actively, despite the remote teaching environment.

Welcome & HCI research at the two research groups (Sustainability & Design, and Design of Information Systems)

Module 1

Methods matter exercise

Why do methods matter? What are they (not) made for?

Write down what you think about these questions in a 3-minutes writing style (not lifting your pen) or in brain-writing style, noting down thoughts/ideas whenever they come to mind.

Bring these notes to the seminar for discussion.

Methods, Outcomes, Disciplines

Module 2

Waves in HCI

Read additional literature (B?dker, see sidebar) and answer the presented questions/thoughts:

  • What is the (second and) third wave in HCI research about?
  •
  • Are we in the 3. wave of HCI now?
  • What were the typical metrics in the 1. wave and what are newer metrics and major shifts in the topics of HCI from 1. to 2. and 3. wave?
  • What could a 4. wave - another paradigm shift - be?

Module 3

_________________________________________________________

Questions you might want to take to the seminars, or you can ask whatever might be relevant for other students, too, on the IN2020 course padlet.

With the assignments we start slowly but steady after this lecture. They get published under assignments (left sidebar). The first is a short one for your reflection on what to expect from the course, with a deadline on 02.09.2020.
