MBV9340 – Advanced neurobiology
Course description
Course content
The course provides a thorough presentation of neuroscience topics from molecules to mind. The course focus on mechanisms underlying normal brain function and important neurological diseases are presented in the context of the mechanisms described. Topics to be covered include membrane biophysics, ion channels, synaptic plasticity, development, neural networks, sensory processing, perception, learning, and memory. The course content may vary from year to year
Learning outcome
Provide the student with an in-depth understanding of the neural foundation for behaviour and cognition. The course provides students with insight into ongoing research in neuroscience at UiO and provides a platform for continued studies in neuroscience.
Admission
PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.
If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.
PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.
The courses MBV4340 and MBV9340 have common admission. Applicants are ranked by the following criteria:
1. PhD candidates and master students at the MN faculty who have the course as part of the approved curriculum.
2. Other PhD candidates and visiting PhD candidates.
3. Students with admission to single courses on master’s level and exchange students
4. Applicants are ranked by credits in each group; all applicants within 1st rank before applicants in 2nd etc. If admission is limited to a fixed number of participants, admission will be decided by drawing lots for students who are ranked equally
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Although no formal prerequisite , students need basic knowledge about neurons and the membrane potential.
Recommended previous knowledge
Relevant background from medicine or courses at IMBV such as MBV3050 – Human physiology (continued) and MBV3010 – Advanced cell biology (continued) or corresponding knowledge.
Students without such knowledge must contact the teacher before the course starts.

Teaching
The course is organized as a full time course over 5 weeks, and includes lectures, seminars and practical demonstrations.
All teaching is mandatory.
This course is offered only if a minimum of 10 participants have registered together on MBV4340 – Advanced neurobiology (discontinued) and MBV9340.
Examination
Give an individual presentation of a research paper or topic to the group taking the course.
Final three hour exam one week after the end of the course.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
