Course content

The course will not be offered untill further notice.

The course gives an introduction to the database resources available to the molecular biologist. Special emphasis will be placed on the use of the most relevant databases including information retrieval and analysis. Use of specific programs such as FASTA, BLAST. A introduction will be given to: DNA sequence editing and contig construction using the STADEN package. Basic UNIX necessary for the use of EMBoss package will be given.and simple scripting. The basic principles underlying the use EMBoss package with specific examples will be covered.

Learning outcome

On completion of the course the student should have a good knowledge of the Web based tools available to the molecular biologist and should be proficient in the use of some of them.The student should also be able to work on the UNIX command line and know the basis principles and the potential in using EMBoss.

Prerequisites

Recommended previous knowledge

Students should have a good working knowledge of molecular biology.

The course is ”free choice” for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the Masters Program “Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Physiology”.

Overlapping courses

This course will be equivalent to BIO355 Applied Bioinformatics. It has a 1 vt overlap with KBJ492 Bioinformatics.

Teaching

Teaching will be given over a five week period with 24 hrs. lectures and 48 hrs. of practical computer work

Examination

During the course the students will be required to solve a set of practical problems. Successful completion of these will contribute to 50 % of the final mark. A written 3 hour examination will contribute to the remaining 50 % of the mark. Letter marks.
