MBV4030 – Laboratory methods in cellular biology

Course content

.

This 5-week course will be comprised of lectures and laboratory practicals. The lectures will cover a range of methods used in molecular cell biology, including classical histology, immunocytochemistry, confocal microscopy, live-cell imaging, electron microscopy, cell culture and electrophysiology. A number of prominently used model systems will be described, including in vitro mammalian cells, Arabidopsis-plant cells, yeast, Drosophila, the Nematode-C.elegans, Zebrafish and mouse.
The practicals will involve demonstrations in a number of the topics/systems covered in the lectures. Each student then has the opportunity to select two of the topics covered in the demonstrations for intensive, three full-day practicals (each topic) in small groups towards the end of the course.

Learning outcome

The course provides students with insight into the most extensively used laboratory methods in experimental cell biology.

Teaching

The course is organized into a full time course over 5 weeks, and includes both theory and practical use of present methods.

Attendance is mandatory for the first lecture, also for those on the waiting list. You will lose your seat on the course if documentation for valid absence is not provided to the student administration studieinfo@ibv.uio.no prior to the first lecture

Examination

The exam consists of a 15 minutes presentation over a given topic .

Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.

Explanations and appeals

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed exam at the beginning of the next semester.

New examinations are offered at the beginning of the next semester for students who do not successfully complete the exam during the previous semester.

We do not offer a re-scheduled exam for students who withdraw during the exam.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: BIOS4030 – Laboratory Methods in Cellular Biology
