BIOS1001 – Evolution, Ecology and the Anthropocene: Introduction to Bioscience

Course content
The course will provide a basic introduction to biology for students without specific background in the subject, and include basic knowledge in genes and inheritance, evolution and ecology (including biodiversity), with a focus on the interaction between man and nature. This will include climate change, loss of diversity, relevant aspects of human behavioral biology and the concept of anthropocene. There will be introduction to lab exercises.
Learning outcome
- A basic understanding of biological concepts and principles as well as research methodology
- Understand the principles of inheritance and evolution
- Understand basic ecological principles
- Basic insights into human evolution, behavior and the interaction between human and nature
- Major environmental challenges related to climate change, species and environmental issues

The course requires no prior knowledge beyond general university and college admissions certification.

Mandatory course work must be approved before the student can attend the exam.
Attendance is mandatory for the first lecture. This also applies for those on the waiting list. You will lose your seat on the course if documentation for absence is not provided to the student administration studieinfo@ibv.uio.no prior to the first lecture.
Approved mandatory course work is valid for 3 years.
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
- 3 hours written exam.
Mandatory course work must be approved before the student can attend the exam.
Examination support material
No examination support material is allowed.
Language of examination
You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
