BIO4371 – Fish ecology

Course content
The course covers the ecology of fish in all types of aquatic environments. The course will cover general topics that are important for understanding the dynamics of fish populations.
Learning outcome
The aim of the course is that the students:
- Obtain an overview of the large morphological, behavioural and life history variability among the fishes.
- Understand how the fishes interact with its biotic and abiotic environment.
- Understand the ecological and evolutionary processes impacting on individuals, populations and species.
- Get and overview of important methods and their strength and weaknesses.
- Get an increased ability to present and discuss relevant issues written and orally.
Admission to the course

Applicants are ranked by the following criteria:?
- Master students at the MN faculty who have the course as part of the approved curriculum.
- Master students
- Students with admission to single courses on master’s level and exchange students
Applicants are ranked by credits in each group; all applicants within 1st rank before applicants in 2nd etc. If admission is limited to a fixed number of participants, admission will be decided by drawing lots for students who are ranked equally.
Recommended previous knowledge
Bachelor?s Degree in Biology or equivalent. Good basic knowledge of ecology.
Overlapping courses
- 10 credits overlap with BIOS4315 – Fish ecology.
- 5 credits overlap with BIO4370 – Fish ecology (discontinued).
Teaching
The course consists of a number lectures on general topics. Further, each participant will:
Present and discuss one scientific paper in class. The presentation must be approved before you can sit the final exam.
Analyse and interpret a data set given by the lecturers. The work (the project) shall lead to a written text that must be approved before you can sit the final exam..
First lecture is mandatory. If you can not attend the first lecture, please send a note to studieinfo@ibv.uio.no, before the first lecture.
The course is only given if 3 or more students meet on the first lecture.
Examination
Final oral exam which counts 100% towards the final grade.
This course has mandatory activities that must be approved before you can sit the final exam.
Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you?withdraw from the exam?after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: BIOS4315 – Fish ecology
Examination support material
No examination support material is allowed.
Language of examination
You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F?is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
The presentation and the project is graded pass/fail. The final oral exam is graded (A-F).
