BIO4325 – Identification of Marine Microalgae and Macroalgae

Course content
The course presents an overview of algal taxonomy and identification of species.
Learning outcome
At the end of the course you will:
- Be familiar with algal taxonomy
- Know the characteristics of algal groups
- Be able to identify algae using morphology and ultra structural features
Admission to the course
The course is only offered to students enrolled in the master’s programme in Biodiversity and Systematics - NABiS. Students who are not enrolled at UiO must first apply for Single Course Studies on the master?s level at University of Oslo within the deadline.Students then apply to the admission to this course by sending documentation of admission to one of the master programmes connected to NABiS to lise.bokenes@ibv.uio.no before the 1st of February.

Students must be enrolled in the Nordic Master programme in Biodiversity and systematics - NABiS

Teaching
The teaching is organized by e-learning using Canvas. Prior to the laboratory and field courses a written assignment will have to be completed and submitted in Canvas.? A mandatory 2 days of laboratory work, followed by a 5 days field course (May-june) at the marine biological station in Dr?bak in Oslofjorden is required.?
As soon as you are registered you will receive information about username and password to get access to Canvas.
As?the?teaching involves laboratory and/or field work, you should consider taking out a separate travel and personal risk insurance.?Read about your insurance cover as a student.
The course is only given if 3?or more students meet on the first lecture.
Cost of taking the course
A mandatory 2 days of laboratory work, followed by a 5 days field course (May-june) at the marine biological station in Dr?bak in Oslofjorden is required. The cost is 150 NOK pr.day, a total of 1050,- NOK. Details about the payment will be sent to you as soon as you are registered. Please note that students are themselves responsible transport to and from the University of Oslo, books and insurance. All expenses connected to this is covered by the students.
Examination
Requires approved participation in the field excursion. Mandatory tasks before the course (counts 20 %) and one written exam at the end of the course (counts 80 %).
Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you?withdraw from the exam?after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt. It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: BIO4320 – Systematics and ecology of marine algae (continued), BIO9320 – Systematics and Ecology of Marine Algae (continued) and BIOS5311F – Identification of Marine Microalgae and Macroalgae.

Language of examination
You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
