BIO1110 – Biodiversity 2

Course content

BIO1110 was taught the last time autumn 2005. It is replaced by BIO1200. BIO1200 is a bigger course than BIO1110, and also covers BIO1100.

The course provides an overview of mycology and zoology with an emphasis on fungi/lichens, terrestrial/limnic invertebrates, and vertebrates. Classification, life history characteristics, biogeography and ecology of selected groups are central themes.

Learning outcome

The students will gain knowledge about important species and groups of taxa that occur in Norwegian nature, their evolutionary relationships and adaptations to the environment. They will become familiar with identification keys and -literature.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

In addition to fulfilling the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway, you must either have 2MX/2MY/3MZ and 3MX/3FY/3KJ/3BI/(2KJ+3BT)/(2BI+3BT) from Norwegian upper secondary school, or have completed equivalent studies in mathematics as well as physics, or chemistry, or biology at upper secondary school or university level at another educational institution. Recommended previous knowledge

BIO1000 – Elementary Biology (discontinued), BIO1100 – Biodiversity 1 (discontinued).

Teaching

The course format is lectures, labwork, obligatory fieldwork: 6 days at Tomb, and 4 days at Finse, including travel. Students are expected to take an active part in classes. The field work starts at the 7th August. The fieldcourse cost NKR 1350. This will have to be paid in advance.

Examination

There will be two written practical exams, each of 3 hours. Ecah exam is weighted approximately 50%.

Other

The students must pay a fee to participate in the obligatory field course.
